Wageningen University & Research - Image Collections

About this collection

The complete Alterra map collection has been added to the Image Collections database of Wageningen University & Research. The collection was made around the year 2000 by the research institute Alterra, now Wageningen Environmental Research.

There are circa 7300 maps depicting natural phenomena in rural areas of the Netherlands. They represent data on soil science, geomorphology, groundwater, landscape, vegetation, flora and fauna, archaeology and cultural history. The maps cover a production period of ca. 55 years, starting from 1945 until 1997.

The Alterra Map Collection combined two collections of maps made by predecessors of Alterra. The major part are approximately 5500 soil maps and maps on related subjects made by the Staring Centrum, for Integrated Land, Soil and Water Research (SC-DLO) and its predecessor the Foundation for Soil Mapping (StiBoKa).

The other part contains ca. 1800 vegetation and fauna maps made by the Institute for Forestry and Nature Research (IBN-DLO) and its predecessors. They were probably also made to illustrate research reports. None of these maps are digitized. These maps are accredited by the personal names of the researchers. You can find them by entering 'IBN' in the search box.

The collection was formerly presented as the Alterra Map Collection, which will be terminated. The hard copy maps are part of the Library’s Special Collections.
